How it works

From the first call to the first day

Most people who call us aren't the man who needs help. They're a partner, a parent, a friend, or a therapist who is worried about him. This section is for all of you. It walks through each step from first contact to arrival. There's a lot of planning between the first call and the first day, and you don't have to do it alone.

  1. Contact us

Congratulations. Reaching out is the first step, and often the hardest one. You can call, email, or send a note on someone else's behalf. The conversation is confidential and there's no pressure. We'll listen first and then explain how a stay works.

  2. See if residential care is the right kind of help

Take time to do your homework. Residential care is one option among several, including outpatient counselling, community programmes, and peer support. Admissions can help you think through what level of support makes sense. A confidential clinical assessment will then help confirm whether a residential stay is appropriate.

  3. Check accessibility

Think through the practical details early: travel to Ottawa, any mobility, medical device, language, or other access needs, and who will be involved in his support while he's here. It's better to raise these on the first calls than on arrival day.

  4. Make sure this centre is right for him

12 Lodge is a small, all-male residence in Ottawa with a maximum of ten Members. It follows the evidence-informed Reset • Balance • Wellness Method™ and offers at least three individual sessions each week. Admission depends on a clinical assessment, and the decision is based on clinical suitability, not on whether someone can pay. If we aren't the right fit, we aim to point you respectfully toward care that is.

  5. Choose a good time

A recommended 42-day stay takes coordination: time away from work, family responsibilities, and the people who will support him from home. Admissions can talk through timing and arrival days so the plan is realistic for everyone involved.

  6. Talk through budgeting

Admissions will walk you through fees, what the stay includes, and what it doesn't. If insurance or employer funding may apply, we'll explain what documentation we can provide. Coverage is only confirmed when the payer confirms it in writing.

  7. Prepare your mindset

For him, this means being willing to begin. Being perfectly ready isn't required. If you're a loved one, our word for your role is Companion: someone who stands beside him without becoming responsible for his recovery. Families take part through structured family involvement, including Sunday Family Day. If you're a clinician, admissions can explain the referral path and how feedback is shared within his consent.

  8. Detox first, if needed

12 Lodge doesn't provide on-site medical detox. If he needs withdrawal management, it has to be completed with appropriate medical care before arrival. Please don't try to manage withdrawal at home without medical guidance. Admissions will explain the substance-free readiness expectation for the residence.

  9. Finalize arrangements

Admissions confirms the remaining details: medical clearance where required, current medications and prescriber information, what to pack, travel, and an arrival day and time. With his consent, we can let a designated Companion know he has arrived safely.

  10. Show up and begin

He arrives and the 42-day stay begins with the Reset Circle. The work doesn't end on his leave date. Included aftercare continues for 12 months after the residential stay. It includes up to 20 outside therapy sessions, 12 months of Lodge continuation, and lifetime access to Haven, the companion inside myLodge for reflection and check-ins. Haven isn't therapy or crisis care.

For the man

If you're thinking about getting help for yourself, a confidential conversation is a safe place to start, and it doesn't commit you to anything.

For a loved one

You don't have to diagnose him or fix him on your own. We'll help you understand the options and how families take part.

Speak with admissions

For a clinician

For physicians, therapists, EAPs, and other professionals: we'll explain our scope, what we are and are not, and how referrals and consent-based feedback work.
